The first time I went to New Zealand was in 1997, almost ten years ago now. There and back in three weeks. There over California, back over Hong Kong, literally around the world. In Auckland we (Lindsey, Vellah and I) borrowed Lindsey's mother's Sunny Nissan to spend a few days touring around. The nice bit was that at that time I also drove in a Sunny Nissan in Holland. The only irritating thing was that everything (steering wheel, gear stick and knobs) was on the opposite side; that took some getting used to.
In 2004 Lindsey and I went again, this time for a slightly longer period. Via internet I hired a Ford Telstar (Escort) station wagon, which we used to 'do' both the North and South Island in just three weeks, about 7000 km altogether. Sometimes we spent the night with family and friends, but more often in motels. B&Bs and Farmstays. This time we're going for a longer period, but hope to spend less time driving and more time staying at nice places. One of those nice spots is this family 'bach' on the beach at Te Maika, which you can only reach by boat. To get to the boat you need a car.
And now, thanks to the help of Lindsey's brother Andrew, we've found that car: a 1994 Toyota Hiace HI-top Campervan, fitted out with everything we'll need en route. It'll be our home for over a month. We hope to enjoy our stay in it, and to resell it at the end of the trip.
